About the Japan Rail Pass

The JR Pass offers international visitors to Japan unlimited, discounted travel on the JR Railway, including the Shinkansen, selected buses and selected ferries.

The JR Pass can also be used for discounted accommodation at JR-affiliated hotels!

What is a Japan Rail Pass?

The (JR) Japan Rail Pass is a special pass valid for unlimited travel on Japan Railways (JR) transportation, including all JR trains, Shinkansen bullet trains (*except Nozomi and Mizuho services), limited express trains, express trains and rapid or local trains, JR bus company local routes (JR Hokkaido Bus, JR Bus Tohoku, JR Bus Kanto, JR Tokai Bus, West Japan JR Bus, Chugoku JR Bus, JR Kyushu Bus) and JR Miyajima ferry.

What is an Exchange Order?

From Japan Package Tours you will purchase an Exchange Order voucher which you MUST convert into a Japan Rail Pass AFTER arriving in Japan. Simply present your Exchange Order and Passport at an official Exchange Office which are located in many train stations throughout Japan. For a list of the location of Exchange Offices, refer to your Japan Rail Pass booklet. *Booklets are provided with each purchase of an Exchange Order.

What is the difference between Standard and First Class?

Both provide a comfortable experience, but as you’d expect, Green class offers larger seats, more foot space and enhanced facilities, in return for a higher price. The enhanced facilities depend on the Shinkansen, but can include foot rests, reading lights, radios, electrical outlets and seat warmers. Green class Shinkansen carriages also tend to be less crowded.
